What would constitute a theatre methodology in social science research? Since the completion of my last study in drama classrooms in Toronto and New York schools, I have given much thought to the process of research and its relationship to the processes of improvised drama. In our collaborative qualitative research with young people in schools, we took methodological liberties. In other words, we dispensed with our tight clothing, that is, a finely—tuned research question about the pedagogies of drama and their relationship to questions of community and social cohesion in heterogeneous schools, and entered into fictional worlds with youth, so that we could better understand what mattered to them and how their imaginations were engaged in being and creating in the place called school. School, as we had conceived it though, was a too— small and insignificant space.

Practice as research might denote a research process that leads to an arts-related output, an arts project as one element of a research process drawing on a range of methods, or a research process entirely framed as artistic practice. Research might start or end in arts practice, draw on arts practice as a part of its process, or be wholly integrated into the shifting forms and outputs of an arts project. Arts practices draw on a variety of creative methodologies that might be incorporated into interdisciplinary research projects as methodological innovations, providing new perspectives on and extending existing knowledge as well as materialising a different kind of knowledge practice. There are a number of philosophical and political drivers here. Perhaps most importantly, if we are to understand the role, processes and function of cultural practice more generally, it is important to be able to explore through doing.

Applied Theatre: Research is the first book to consolidate thinking about applied theatre as research through a thorough investigation of ATAR as a research methodology. It will be an indispensable resource for teachers and researchers in the area. The first section of the book details the history of the relationship between applied theatre and research, especially in the area of evaluation and impact assessment, and offering an examination of the literature surrounding applied theatre and research. The book then explores how applied theatre as research ATAR works as a democratic and pro-social adjunct to community based research and explains its complex relationship to arts informed inquiry, Indigenous research methods and other research epistemologies. The book provides a rationale for this approach focusing on its capacity for reciprocity within communities. The second part of the book provides a series of international case studies of effective practice which detail some of the key approaches in the method and based on work conducted in Australia, New Zealand, Singapore and the South Pacific.

Research Methods in Theatre and Performance (Research Methods for the Arts and the Humanities)

Performance theory originates from a variety of fields, but is most associated with the work of Victor Turner and Richard Schechner These two authors drew attention to the performative nature of societies around the world, how events and rituals as well as daily life were all governed by a code of performance. From ethnographic studies in different societies in different contexts, these authors highlighted how performances are central to human understanding.
