Films And Feminism Essays In Indian Cinema

Madath Thekkepaattu Vasudevan Nair born , popularly known as MT , is an Indian author, screenplay writer and film director. He shot into fame at the age of 20 when, as a chemistry undergraduate, he won the prize for the best short story in Malayalam at World Short Story Competition conducted by The New York Herald Tribune. The deep emotional experiences of his early days have gone into the making of MT's novels. Most of his works are oriented towards the basic Malayalam family structure and culture and many of them were path-breaking in the history of Malayalam literature. His three seminal novels on life in the matriarchal family in Kerala are Naalukettu , Asuravithu , and Kaalam.

As a result, the lack of equality both on and off-screen has raised questions on gender stereotyping, the quality of media being viewed by the public, and the misinterpretation of a balanced society. Besides being a far cry from reality, such films create an inaccurate impression of the capabilities and interests of women and thus indirectly plant the seeds of inequality in the minds of people. Adjectives used to describe males left and females right in Bollywood movies. Influenced by factors such as politics, economic structure, and culture, the perception of women by film enthusiasts and the like have helped define boundaries both on-screen and behind the scenes. Keeping in mind the unrealistic ideals displayed in several films, and the lack of women representation behind movies, it does not come as a surprise that the Indian film industry is often looked upon as a male-dominated environment.

In feminist theory , the male gaze is the act of depicting women and the world , in the visual arts [1] and in literature , [2] from a masculine, heterosexual perspective that presents and represents women as sexual objects for the pleasure of the heterosexual male viewer. The concept was first used by the English art critic John Berger in Ways of Seeing , a series of films for the BBC aired in January , and later a book, as part of his analysis of the treatment of the nude in European painting. It soon became popular among feminists , including the British film critic Laura Mulvey , who used it to critique traditional media representations of the female character in cinema. The terms scopophilia and scoptophilia identify both the aesthetic pleasures and the sexual pleasures derived from looking at someone or something. The male gaze is conceptually contrasted with the female gaze. The existentialist philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre introduced the concept of le regard , the gaze , in Being and Nothingness , wherein the act of gazing at another human being creates a subjective power difference, which is felt by the gazer and by the gazed, because the person being gazed at is perceived as an object, not as a human being.
