Don't have an account? Harry Frankfurt and Bernard Williams have contended that our integrity as agents depends on being subject to a form of voluntary volitional incapacity.

Making judgments about whether a person is morally responsible for her behavior, and holding others and ourselves responsible for actions and the consequences of actions, is a fundamental and familiar part of our moral practices and our interpersonal relationships. The judgment that a person is morally responsible for her behavior involves—at least to a first approximation—attributing certain powers and capacities to that person, and viewing her behavior as arising in the right way from the fact that the person has, and has exercised, these powers and capacities. Whatever the correct account of the powers and capacities at issue and canvassing different accounts is the task of this entry , their possession qualifies an agent as morally responsible in a general sense: that is, as one who may be morally responsible for particular exercises of agency. Normal adult human beings may possess the powers and capacities in question, and non-human animals, very young children, and those suffering from severe developmental disabilities or dementia to give a few examples are generally taken to lack them.

The Limits of Evil and the Role of Moral Address: A Defense of Strawsonian Compatibilism

Strawson defends compatibilism by appeal to our natural commitment to the interpersonal community and the reactive attitudes. While Strawson's compatibilist project has much to recommend it, his account of moral agency appears incomplete. Gary Watson has attempted to fortify Strawson's theory by appeal to the notion of moral address. Watson then proceeds to argue, however, that Strawson's theory of moral responsibility so fortified would commit Strawson to treating extreme evil as its own excuse. Watson also argues that the reactive attitudes do not lend unequivocal support to Strawsonian compatibilism and that the reactive attitudes are sometimes sensitive to considerations which suggest an incompatibilist or skeptical diagnosis.

Responsibility and the Limits of Good and Evil

In philosophy , moral responsibility is the status of morally deserving praise , blame , reward , or punishment for an act or omission performed or neglected in accordance with one's moral obligations. Philosophers refer to people who have moral responsibility for an action as moral agents. Agents have the capability to reflect upon their situation, to form intentions about how they will act, and then to carry out that action. The notion of free will has become an important issue in the debate on whether individuals are ever morally responsible for their actions and, if so, in what sense. Incompatibilists regard determinism as at odds with free will, whereas compatibilists think the two can coexist.

GARY WATSON: Responsibility is one aspect of the identity of char- acter and conduct. We are responsible for our conduct.

Gary Watson: Strawsonian

Don't have an account? Strawson attempts to defuse the debate about determinism, understanding our moral practices, in which we demand good will and respect from one another, as constitutive of the conditions for moral responsibility. Scepticism about responsibility would call into question this fundamental form of human concern. Holding one another responsible does not derive from metaphysical commitments but simply expresses our natural concerns as moral beings. Strawson shows that our blaming or reactive attitudes, which express these demands, can be explained in these terms.

Don't have an account? Both libertarians and compatibilists have tended to explain away the harder edges of their respective views. Libertarianism, we are assured by some of its advocates, requires no radical adjustment of our conception of agency and its place in nature.
