Relations between the Catholic Church and the state
The fact that all Christians belonging to mainstream Christian denominations profess faith in Jesus and receive baptism according to the Trinitarian formula is seen as being a basis for ecumenism and its goal of Christian unity. In , the Ecumenical Patriarch of the Eastern Orthodox Church , Germanus V of Constantinople , wrote a letter "addressed 'To all the Churches of Christ, wherever they may be', urging closer co-operation among separated Christians, and suggesting a 'League of Churches', parallel to the newly founded League of Nations ". Each year, Christians observe the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity for the goal of ecumenism, which is coordinated by the World Council of Churches and adopted by many of its member Churches. In Christianity, the qualification ecumenical was originally and still is used in terms such as " Ecumenical council " and " Ecumenical Patriarch ", in the meaning of pertaining to the totality of the larger Church such as the Catholic Church or the Eastern Orthodox Church rather than being restricted to one of its constituent local churches or dioceses. Used in this sense, the term carries no connotation of re-uniting the historically separated Christian denominations but presumes a unity of local congregations in a worldwide communion. The term ecumenism as it is now commonly used refers to interdenominational cooperation between different Christian Churches.
A growing movement in our country, bolstered by recent legal decisions in some states as well as from government actions taken in several other countries, favors making same-sex unions the legal equivalent of marriage. In response to this movement, we believe Catholics and all citizens must reflect deeply on the meaning of marriage itself. We must ask important questions: What is marriage, its purposes, and its value to individuals, families and society? As the issues surrounding same-sex unions take on increasing prominence here in Arizona, we feel such reflection, using both reason and faith, is a proper beginning point and framework for the current debate. We, the Catholic Bishops of Arizona, are deeply concerned for our Catholic believers and the well being of society here in Arizona regarding the meaning of marriage. We offer this document to assist in understanding Catholic teaching about marriage and to make clear why we pro- mote marriage as a sacred reality between man and woman. Marriage, as designed by God, is a faithful, exclusive, lifelong union of a man and a woman joined in an intimate community of life and love.

The links under the More information section should be consulted for the definitive positions. In addition, our companion websites have further information on the three Christian traditions:. Find Live-Streamed Masses. This list is based as far as possible on information on websites of the communities themselves. If the community's website supports a conclusion that the community celebrates baptism with a genuine washing with water and the use of the Trinitarian formula "in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit" , then the proper intention by the minister is presumed. The practices of the community at the time of the baptism needs to be considered. Baptism as an "ordinance" might be valid. Some do not.
The relations between the Catholic Church and the state have been constantly evolving with various forms of government, some of them controversial in retrospect. In its history it has had to deal with various concepts and systems of governance, from the Roman Empire to the medieval divine right of kings , from nineteenth- and twentieth-century concepts of democracy and pluralism to the appearance of left- and right-wing dictatorial regimes. The Second Vatican Council 's decree Dignitatis humanae stated that religious freedom is a civil right that should be recognized in constitutional law. Christianity emerged in the 1st century as one of many new religions in the Roman Empire. Early Christians were persecuted as early as 64 A. Christianity remained a growing, monarchism, minority religion in the empire for several centuries. Roman persecutions of Christians climaxed due to Emperor Diocletian till the turn of the 4th century.
This essay examines the relation of the religious universalism of the Catholic Church to nationality, patriotism, and the ideology of nationalism. In the abstract, one expects there to be a tension between monotheism and the existence of nations. Keywords: Catholic Church , nation , nationality , nationalism , patriotism , religion , universalism , Kulturkampf , monotheism , subsidiarity. We are bound, then, to love dearly the country whence we have received the means of engagement this mortal life affords, but we have a much more urgent obligation to love, with ardent love, the Church to which we owe the life of the soul, a life that will endure forever. Love of our motherland unites us and must unite us above all the differences. It has nothing in common with narrow nationalism or chauvinism. It is the right of the human heart.
