Diminishing Marginal Returns Definition.

The law of diminishing marginal returns is one of the fundamental principles of economics, and it is important for finding the right balance in production within an organization. Regardless of the nature of the company, understanding the law of diminishing marginal returns will have a direct impact on its efficiency.

In this online lesson, we explore fixed and variable costs, and consider how the law of diminishing marginal returns helps to explain the shape of short run cost curves. There is also lots of opportunity to practise those all-important quantitative skills! Additional teacher guidance is available at the end of this lesson. Thank you to Cathy Williams and Jon Clark for their contributions to this lesson.

## The Law of Diminishing Marginal Returns

Law of diminishing returns explains that when more and more units of a variable input are employed on a given quantity of fixed inputs, the total output may initially increase at increasing rate and then at a constant rate, but it will eventually increase at diminishing rates. In other words, the total output initially increases with an increase in variable input at given quantity of fixed inputs, but it starts decreasing after a point of time. The law of diminishing returns is described by different economists in different ways, which are as follows:. According to G. According to F. Let us understand the law of diminishing returns with the help of an example. Suppose a mining organization has machinery as the capital and mine workers as the labor in the short-run production.

The law of diminishing marginal returns is a theory in economics that predicts that after some optimal level of capacity is reached, adding an additional factor of production will actually result in smaller increases in output. For example, a factory employs workers to manufacture its products, and, at some point, the company operates at an optimal level. With all other production factors constant, adding additional workers beyond this optimal level will result in less efficient operations. The law of diminishing returns is related to the concept of diminishing marginal utility. It can also be contrasted with economies of scale. The law of diminishing marginal returns is also referred to as the "law of diminishing returns," the "principle of diminishing marginal productivity," and the "law of variable proportions. The law does not imply that the additional unit decreases total production, which is known as negative returns ; however, this is commonly the result.

## Law of Diminishing Marginal Returns

The production function relates the maximum amount of output that can be obtained from a given number of inputs. In economics, a production function relates physical output of a production process to physical inputs or factors of production. It is a mathematical function that relates the maximum amount of output that can be obtained from a given number of inputs — generally capital and labor. The production function, therefore, describes a boundary or frontier representing the limit of output obtainable from each feasible combination of inputs. Firms use the production function to determine how much output they should produce given the price of a good, and what combination of inputs they should use to produce given the price of capital and labor. When firms are deciding how much to produce they typically find that at high levels of production, their marginal costs begin increasing.

In economics , diminishing returns is the decrease in the marginal incremental output a production process as the amount of a single factor of production is incrementally increased, while the amounts of all other factors of production stay constant. The law of diminishing returns states that in productive processes, increasing a factor of production by one, while holding all others constant " ceteris paribus " , will at some point return lower output per incremental input unit. Under diminishing returns, returns remain positive, though they approach zero. The modern understanding of the law adds the dimension of holding other outputs equal, since a given process is understood to be able to produce co-products. The law of diminishing returns is a fundamental principle of economics. However, classical economists such as Malthus and Ricardo attributed the successive diminishment of output to the decreasing quality of the inputs. Neoclassical economists assume that each "unit" of labor is identical.

Diminishing returns , also called law of diminishing returns or principle of diminishing marginal productivity , economic law stating that if one input in the production of a commodity is increased while all other inputs are held fixed, a point will eventually be reached at which additions of the input yield progressively smaller, or diminishing, increases in output. In the classic example of the law, a farmer who owns a given acreage of land will find that a certain number of labourers will yield the maximum output per worker. If he should hire more workers, the combination of land and labour would be less efficient because the proportional increase in the overall output would be less than the expansion of the labour force. The output per worker would therefore fall.

Родители согласились. Хотя Энсей Танкадо никогда прежде не видел компьютера, он как будто инстинктивно знал, как с ним обращаться.
