It is a fictionalized autobiography, using the name Eugene Gant for Wolfe's, detailing the protagonist's early and mid-twenties, during which time the character attends Harvard University, moves to New York City and teaches English at a university there, and travels overseas with the character Francis Starwick. Francis Starwick was based on Wolfe's friend, playwright Kenneth Raisbeck.

For Huck and Jim, the Mississippi River is the ultimate symbol of freedom. Alone on their raft, they do not have to answer to anyone. Much like the river itself, Huck and Jim are in flux, willing to change their attitudes about each other with little prompting. Even early on, the real world intrudes on the paradise of the raft: the river floods, bringing Huck and Jim into contact with criminals, wrecks, and stolen goods. Then, a thick fog causes them to miss the mouth of the Ohio River, which was to be their route to freedom.

While still dominated by forest, the Palmer River watershed contains significant agriculture and development and faces increasing development pressure. Moreover, multiple studies by both states since have repeatedly documented continuing impairments in the Palmer River due to elevated levels of fecal indicator bacteria as well as total suspended solids TSS and nutrients nitrogen and phosphorus RIDEM, PDF pp, 3.

Figure 2. Department of Agriculture to abate fecal contamination through the installation of agricultural conservation practices or best management practices BMPs.

However, until this project, much of the water quality data collected have yet to be evaluated for trends, and the current status of water quality and the effectiveness of agricultural BMP implementation work in the watershed were unknown. To address this gap, beginning in , samples were collected for ribonucleic acid RNA microarray analysis using PhyloChip and are awaiting analysis. The PhyloChip is a cutting-edge analytical tool that uses specific genetic markers to determine the relative contribution to fecal contamination by different sources i.

Figure 3. The purpose of the project was to assist US EPA Region 1 with: 1 developing recommendations for use of the PhyloChip to maximize the ability to identify fecal contamination sources with limited resources; 2 analyzing water quality trends in the Palmer River watershed using existing water quality data, geospatial information, and summary papers; and 3 assessing the impact that changing land use is expected to have in the Palmer River watershed and providing recommendations for reducing the impacts of land development on water quality.

Results will be used by US EPA Region 1, state agencies, and local municipalities to 1 revise the current water quality monitoring program, including site selection and parameters e. The overall organization of the Project by Task is set forth below, along with a proposed schedule. As they become final, Project Reports deliverables are provided below:. Ray Cody cody. Every river is part of a larger system—a watershed, which is the land drained by a river and its tributaries. Rivers are large natural streams of water flowing in channels and emptying into larger bodies of water. This diagram shows some common characteristics of a river system. Every river is different, however, so not all rivers may look exactly like this illustration. The river source , also called the headwaters, is the beginning of a river.

What is a River System?

The joint multifractal analysis is usually conducted in two different variables for their cross-correlations but rarely used for two records of one variable collected at two different places. It is important for the detection of change in multifractality in space. Besides, the cross-correlations in two analyzed series make the analysis of sources of joint multifractality difficult. There are few studies on the source of joint multifractality. We focus on the two issues for two level records at pairs of adjacent sites along one river and carry out an extension of our previous work which is about the single multifractality of one record with the same data set.

As might be expected the flow rate of the river is determined mainly by the rainfall in the upper basin.
