Ama Biney has done a masterful work in analyzing an important issue, as reflected in the garnering of evidence, the demonstration of analytical rigor and balance, and thorough and comprehensive analysis. The writing is lively, compelling and enlightening. This work is easily among the best books I have ever read on Kwame Nkrumah. Newton: The Radical Theorist. This work by Ama Biney is a significant and positive contribution to the literature on the history of African political leadership.

History of Ghana

A reduced kingdom continued to exist after Almoravid rule ended, and the kingdom was later incorporated into subsequent Sahelian empires , such as the Mali Empire several centuries later. Farming began earliest on the southern tips of the Sahara , eventually giving rise to village settlements. By the end of the 16th century, most of the ethnic groups constituting the modern Ghanaian population had settled in their present locations. These migrations resulted in part from the formation and disintegration of a series of large states in the western Sudan the region north of modern Ghana drained by the Niger River. They were also masters of the trade in gold, which drew North African merchants to the western Sudan. Ghana succumbed to attacks by its neighbors in the 11th century, but its name and reputation endured.

In preparing this for publication I owe a debt of gratitude toseveral friends and colleagues. Jack Goody of St. I am particularly thankful to my friend and colleague Professor A. Adu Boahen of Legon, who first initiated me into historical researchand drew my attention to the wealth of untapped materials in Hol-land. His fatherly interest and critical mind provedgreat assets to me. My research was made possible by the postgraduate scholarshipthat was granted me by the University of Ghana.

In this article, Ivor Wilks reconsiders the debate he himself sparked off in regarding the conditions for the emergence, in the mids, of Akan states in the forest region of present-day Ghana. Twi speakers were organized into matriclans, which favoured the assimilation of foreigners. Relict landscapes of the Bron and Akan. The perplexing question of the identity of the Akan and the Bron, which continues to be of much political sensitivity in present-day Ghana, is the principal matter to be addressed here. The roots of this problem are to be found in antiquity. The reader should not expect any extended discussion here of the nature of lore that has been transmitted orally for extended periods of time.
