Socrates , born c. Socrates was an ancient Greek philosopher, one of the three greatest figures of the ancient period of Western philosophy the others were Plato and Aristotle , who lived in Athens in the 5th century BCE. A legendary figure even in his own time, he was admired by his followers for his integrity, his self-mastery, his profound philosophical insight, and his great argumentative skill. He was the first Greek philosopher to seriously explore questions of ethics. Socrates professed not to teach anything and indeed not to know anything important but only to seek answers to urgent human questions e. His style of philosophizing was to engage in public conversations about some human excellence and, through skillful questioning, to show that his interlocutors did not know what they were talking about.
Socrates is one of the few individuals whom one could say has so-shaped the cultural and intellectual development of the world that, without him, history would be profoundly different. He is best known for his association with the Socratic method of question and answer, his claim that he was ignorant or aware of his own absence of knowledge , and his claim that the unexamined life is not worth living, for human beings. He was the inspiration for Plato, the thinker widely held to be the founder of the Western philosophical tradition. Plato in turn served as the teacher of Aristotle, thus establishing the famous triad of ancient philosophers: Socrates, Plato , and Aristotle. Unlike other philosophers of his time and ours, Socrates never wrote anything down but was committed to living simply and to interrogating the everyday views and popular opinions of those in his home city of Athens.
Why should we still care about a man who did little in his life except talk, and who drank poison in an Athenian prison in BC — over 2, years ago? Some stories shape the ways people think, dream and imagine. The death of Socrates has had a huge and almost continuous impact on western culture. The only death of comparable importance in our history is that of Jesus, with whom Socrates has often been compared. The aim of this book is to explain why the death of Socrates has mattered so much, over such an enormously long period of time and to so many different people. The death of Socrates has always been controversial.

The painting focuses on a classical subject like many of his works from that decade, in this case the story of the execution of Socrates as told by Plato in his Phaedo. Socrates uses his death as a final lesson for his pupils rather than fleeing when the opportunity arises, and faces it calmly. In the painting, an old man in a white robe sits upright on a bed, one hand extended over a cup, the other gesturing in the air. He is surrounded by other men of varying ages, most showing emotional distress, unlike the old man, who remains calm. The young man handing him the cup looks the other way, with his face in his free hand.
Satish Padiyar; Who Is Socrates? Desire and Subversion in David's Death of Socrates Representations 1 May ; 1 : 27— This essay examines the contradictions involved in projecting an Enlightenment visual image of Socrates. I argue that in J. David's canonical painting of , Death of Socrates, the attempt to project a rational transcendental philosophical subjectivity is contaminated by the irruption of a queer sodomitic sexual desire, and that David's repeated attempt to envision the sexually appetitive embodied philosopher ends in aporia.
PDF | In Phaedo, Plato shows the grace of a true courage which can affirm life even in death. Socrates' courage is not that of the martyr.
