Collecting three comedies that show Aristophanes tackling the consequences of war and social upheaval in Athens with his characteristic wit, Lysistrata and Other Plays is translated from the Greek with an introduction and notes by Alan H. Sommerstein in Penguin Classics. Writing at a time of political and social crisis in Athens, Aristophanes was an eloquent, yet bawdy challenger to the demagogue and the sophist. In Lysistrata, the titular heroine persuades the women of Greece to withhold sex from their husbands, forcing them to end the Peloponnesian War; and in The Archanians, a lone peasant enters into a private peace treaty with the Spartans, much to the chagrin of his fellow Athenians. The darker comedy of The Clouds satirises Athenian philosophers, Socrates in particular, and reflects the uncertainties of a generation in which all traditional religious and ethical beliefs were being challenged.

Aristophanes - BC , also known as the "Father" or "Prince" of ancient comedy, was one of ancient Athens' most famous playwrights. Only eleven of his forty plays exist in their entirety, but with the fragments of the others they make up the only real surviving example of a genre known as Old Comedy. Aristophanes is thought to have embodied people and times of ancient Athens better than any of his contemporaries. His powers of ridicule were feared and admired by his peers. Lysistrata is one of his surviving plays and it was performed in BC in Athens.

Lysistrata and Other Plays

Marrying deft social commentary to a rich, earthy comedy, the three comedies collected in Aristophanes' The Frogs and Other Plays offers a unique insight into one of the most turbulent periods in Ancient Greek history. This Penguin Classics edition is translated by David Barrett with revisions, an introduction and notes by Shomit Dutta. The master of ancient Greek comic drama, Aristophanes combined slapstick, humour and cheerful vulgarity with acute political observations. In The Frogs, written during the Peloponnesian War, Dionysus descends to the Underworld to bring back a poet who can help Athens in its darkest hour, and stages a great debate to help him decide between the traditional wisdom of Aeschylus and the brilliant modernity of Euripides. The clash of generations and values is also the object of Aristophanes' satire in Wasps, in which an old-fashioned father and his loose-living son come to blows and end up in court.

LYSISTRATA AND OTHER PLAYS: THE ACHARNIANS, THE CLOUDS, LYSISTRATA; ED. BY ALAN H. SOMMERSTEIN.
