## Measurement Techniques

Direct comparison between rotational and extrusion rheometers. The use of cone and plate rotational rheology to characterize the flow properties of concentrated dispersion and extrusion methods to determine the rheological properties of pastes have become established rheometric techniques. Direct comparison between the results obtained from the two techniques has not previously been demonstrated. In this article the results of such a comparison using established experimental methods and associated analysis are reported. The computed results for two techniques are shown to be, within the experimental error, identical over this shear rate range. Keywords: rheology, extrusion, flow, stresses, mechanical properties. The measurement of the rheological behavior of viscoelastic melts is much more challenging than determining the viscosity of a Newtonian fluid, but reliable data on melts are essential for resin characterization, quality control, evaluating processability and for use in process simulation. This chapter describes the instruments and techniques used to learn about the rheological behavior of molten polymers. Rotational rheometers are used to obtain linear behavior but are of limited utility in exploring nonlinear behavior. Capillary rheometers are used to determine viscosity at moderate to high shear rates and to study the occurrence of flow instabilities and melt fracture. The extrusion plastometer , commonly called a melt indexer and widely used in the plastics industry, is a useful tool although not a true rheometer.

The torque measuring system, which consists of a calibrated beryllium-copper spring connecting the drive mechanism to a rotating cone, senses the resistance to rotation caused by the presence of sample fluid between the cone and a stationary flat plate. The resistance to the rotation of the cone produces a torque that is proportional to the shear stress in the fluid. Alternatively, viscosity can be calculated from the known geometric constants of the cone, the rate of rotation, and the stress related torque. The correct relative position of cone and plate is obtained by following a simple mechanical procedure without the need for external gauges or supplementary instrumentation. The stationary plate forms the bottom of a sample cup which can be removed, filled with 0.

The errors on rheological measurements due to overfilling of Newtonian fluids using parallel plate and cone-plate setups in rotational rheometry are quantified. Overfilled sample causes an additional drag force, thereby increasing the measured viscosity, especially when the sample wets the geometry rim. This viscosity error increases proportionally with the ratio of gap height to radius of the geometry. By developing a scaling relation that captures the main effects of the geometrical parameters on the viscosity error due to overfilling, a master curve was constructed for the viscosity error as a function of the amount of overfilling. Our systematic analysis of the viscosity error due to overfilling can be utilized to correct for this error during rheological measurements in which overfilling is known but unavoidable or desired. Rotational rheometers are ubiquitous in both academia and industry.
