Scientific discovery is the process or product of successful scientific inquiry. Objects of discovery can be things, events, processes, causes, and properties as well as theories and hypotheses and their features their explanatory power, for example. Most philosophical discussions of scientific discoveries focus on the generation of new hypotheses that fit or explain given data sets or allow for the derivation of testable consequences. Some philosophical disputes about the nature of scientific discovery reflect these terminological variations. Philosophical issues also arise about rational heuristics, about the characteristics of hypotheses worthy of articulation and testing, and, on the meta-level, about the nature and scope of philosophical reflection itself.

In Chapter 2 we present evidence that scientific research in education accumulates just as it does in the physical, life, and social sciences. Consequently, we believe that such research would be worthwhile to pursue to build further knowledge about education, and about education policy and practice. These are daunting questions that philosophers, historians, and scientists have debated for several centuries see Newton-Smith for a current assessment. Merton , for example, saw commonality among the sciences.

In jurisprudence, a debate exists about the possibility and desirability of a rigid distinction between discovery how a judge actually reaches a decision and justification how a judge publicly justifies a decision. I propose a six-fold classification, through which we can identify reasons, acts, and processes that play a role both in the context of discovery and in the context of justification. This six-fold classification enables us to move forward from debating whether discovery and justification can be rigidly separated, towards articulating how each element reasons, acts, and processes has a role to play in each of the contexts discovery and justification , and how these elements and contexts are related. The objective of this article is to analyse and clarify the conceptual framework that permeates the debate about the distinction between discovery and justification in legal decision-making. While on the one hand the majority of contemporary literature either advocates for or presupposes a rigid distinction between discovery and justification, on the other hand this distinction is being challenged by those who defend that such a distinction is unachievable, undesirable, or both.

The gold standard for an empirical science is the replicability of its research results. So the standard mode of applying null-hypothesis significance testing NHST fails to adequately separate stable from random effects. Therefore, NHST does not fully convince as a statistical inference strategy. Thus, we can overcome the replicability crisis by integrating empirical results into genuine research programs. Instead of continuing to narrowly evaluate only the stability of data against random fluctuations discovery context , such programs evaluate rival hypotheses against stable data justification context. Empirical psychology and the social sciences at large remain in crisis today, because too many key-results cannot be replicated Baker, ; Open Science Collaboration, ; Etz and Vandekerckhove,

In his Art and Illusion , art historian Ernst Gombrich argues that the emergence and development of styles of pictorial representation depend on the availability of certain schemata , which can be documented. He himself documents the schemata responsible for the emergence and development of several styles. Nothing of this kind has been done as far as the growth of scientific knowledge is concerned. In this article we discuss whether is it possible to document something analogous to Gombrich's schemata that can be of crucial relevance for the development of clinical research.

From a stamp engraved on copper by Th. The Doctrine of Discovery established a spiritual, political, and legal justification for colonization and seizure of land not inhabited by Christians. Foundational elements of the Doctrine of Discovery can be found in a series of papal bulls, or decrees, beginning in the s, which included sanctions, enforcements, authorizations, explusions, admonishments, excommunications, denunciations, and expressions of territorial sovereignty for Christian monarchs supported by the Catholic Church. This ideology supported the dehumanization of those living on the land and their dispossession, murder, and forced assimilation. The Doctrine fueled white supremacy insofar as white European settlers claimed they were instruments of divine design and possessed cultural superiority.
