The term modal scales is applied to a group of scales commonly used in pop and jazz music. Each mode has a name, and mode names come from the Greek language and from a time before major and minor as we know them were clearly defined. The scale we now know as major was originally called the Ionian mode and its relative minor was known as Aeolian. We will use these two commonly known scales as a point of reference, as we look at the modal scales.

It only takes a minute to sign up. I'm a self-taught pianist. I know how to play all the major and minor scales, so I believe I can progress to modes. How should I practice modes on the piano?

From their meaning to their history in Western music, here's an easy guide to modes. The modes were named after various regions, perhaps to represent the people who lived there, because Greek musical theorists were philosophers too, and associated the arts with aspects of morality. Some of them are major modes, some are minor, and some are ambiguous. Some modes are sadder or holier than others.

Learning piano styles and modes allows you to understand, play and appreciate a wider range of music. Piano is one of the most versatile and beautiful sounding instruments. Simple in its design and playability, the sound of the piano appears across a wide range of musical genres.
