Spatially explicit ecosystem models of all types require an initial allocation of biomass, often in areas where fisheries independent abundance estimates do not exist. A generalized additive modelling GAM approach is used to describe the abundance of 40 species groups i. Predictor variables included in the model are chlorophyll a , sediment type, dissolved oxygen, temperature, and depth.

The start of spring brings an increased risk of wildfires when temps are warmer and leaves are dry. The annual statewide ban prohibiting residential brush burning runs through May
Artificial reefs are commonly used as a management tool, in part to provide ecosystem services, including opportunities for recreational fishing and diving. Quantifying the use of artificial reefs by recreational boaters is essential for determining their value as ecosystem services. In this study, four artificial—natural reef pairs in the eastern Gulf of Mexico off western Florida were investigated for boat visitation rates using autonomous acoustic recorders. An automatic detection algorithm was used to identify boat noise in individual files using the harmonic peaks generated by boat engines, and by comparing the sound amplitude of each file with surrounding files.

Goliath grouper Epinephelus itajara suffered significant overfishing in the United States until they were protected from harvest in As the population recovers, interactions between Goliath grouper and anglers have increased, and are often reported to management agencies as complaints after grouper predation upon hooked fish. Goliath grouper are generally characterized as opportunistic predators capable of consuming a wide variety of prey types; however, minimal data are available regarding the prey capture behavior of this species. Mobile epibenthic food tethered swimming fish elicited larger maximum gapes, faster times to food capture, shorter times to mouth closing, and more rapid total bite durations than food items that were not moving cut dead bait. Feeding sequences involving mobile food items were characterized by a significantly higher degree of ram feeding behavior, while immobile food elicited primarily suction feeding and were preceded by a slower and closer approach to the food item prior to the onset of mouth opening. The findings are discussed in light of predation upon angled species and demonstrate the ability of Goliath grouper to adjust their feeding strategy based upon prey type and condition.

The CBMP Marine has released the State of the Arctic Marine Biodiversity Report SAMBR , a synthesis of the state of knowledge about biodiversity in Arctic marine ecosystems, detectable changes, and important gaps in the ability to assess status and trends of biodiversity across six focal ecosystem components FECs : marine mammals, seabirds, fishes, benthos, plankton, and sea ice biota. The report provides an important first step to identify knowledge gaps in circumpolar biodiversity monitoring efforts. The session provides an overview of monitoring results, advice for monitoring and recent implementation actions taken to follow-up on recommendations. Melnikov, P. Sea ice is an important Arctic habitat that supports a high diversity of species—with over protist taxa alone. Multi-year sea ice is being replaced by first-year ice and open water, which will cause shifts in ice algal communities with cascading effects on the ice-associated ecosystem.
