The physical structure of the body plays an important role in the behavior of an individual. The most important physical structure for psychologists is the nervous system. The nervous system carries orders from the brain and spinal cord to various glands and muscles, it also carries signals from stimuli receptors to the spinal cord and brain.

Neuroscience or neurobiology is the scientific study of the nervous system. The scope of neuroscience has broadened over time to include different approaches used to study the nervous system at different scales and the techniques used by neuroscientists have expanded enormously, from molecular and cellular studies of individual neurons to imaging of sensory , motor and cognitive tasks in the brain. The earliest study of the nervous system dates to ancient Egypt.

Neuroscience

Conscious experience in humans depends on brain activity, so neuroscience will contribute to explaining consciousness. What would it be for neuroscience to explain consciousness? How much progress has neuroscience made in doing so? What challenges does it face? How can it meet those challenges? What is the philosophical significance of its findings? This entry addresses these and related questions.

Cocaine has two effects on synaptic transmission: it impairs reuptake of dopamine and it causes more dopamine to be released into the synaptic cleft. Would cocaine be classified as an agonist or antagonist? In other words, they prevent sodium from moving across the neuronal membrane.

The nervous system controls bodily function by gathering sensory input, integrating that information internally, and communicating proper motor output. The nervous system allows organisms to sense, organize, and react to information in the environment. The basic unit of the nervous system is the neuron. Synapses form between the neurons, allowing them to communicate to other neurons or other systems in the body. The neurons responsible for taking information to the CNS are known as afferent neurons, while the neurons that carry the responses from the CNS to the PNS are known as efferent neurons. The human nervous system : The nervous system of the human body, including the brain and spinal cord central nervous system and all the nerves of the body peripheral nervous system.

Genes, Cells and Brain Areas of Intelligence

This field of psychology is often referred to by a variety of names including biopsychology, physiological psychology, behavioral neuroscience, and psychobiology. Biopsychologists often look at how biological processes interact with emotions, cognitions, and other mental processes. While biopsychology might seem like a fairly recent development thanks to the introduction of advanced tools and technology for examining the brain, the roots of the field date back thousands of years to the time of the early philosophers. In other words, philosophers and other thinkers wondered what the relationship was between the mental world and the physical world.

Biological Bases for Behavior Key Terms Neurons Neurons: The basic functional units of the nervous system; cells which contain specialized structures to communicate signals. Axon: A long, tubular structure in a neuron that transmits action potentials. Myelin sheath: A fatty substance that coats an axon, insulating it and enhancing its ability to transmit action potentials. Terminal buttons: The branching structures at the ends of axons that release neurotransmitters.

Psychology as a Biological Science

Behavioral neuroscience ; Biopsychology ; Cognitive neuroscience ; Physiological psychology ; Psychobiology. Biological psychology can be concisely defined as the scientific study of the biological processes underlying or influencing mind and behavior.

This text covered a number of sub-fields of biological psychology that I would want to expose students to.
